The British Journalism Awards for public interest journalism are held on 11 December 2017 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.

Launched in 2012, this event is unique among the major journalism prizes in the UK in that it is open to all journalists working in whatever media.

Created partly as a response to the hacking scandal and the Leveson Inquiry, these awards aim to celebrate and promote great journalism which is both interesting to the public AND in the public interest.

Last year the winners ranged from journalist of the year BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg to the brave citizen journalists behind the website Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently who have risked their lives to reveal the truth of the dreadful situation in Syria.

The 50+ British Journalism Awards judges include 11 former national newspaper editors and are chosen for their experience and expertise.
The judges are chaired by Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford.

The inaugural British Journalism Awards was held at Stationers' Hall in the City of London on 4 December 2012.

Since then the event has grown every year and it has now finally outgrown its original home, moving to the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in Holborn and a seated dinner.

In 2016 it attracted some 500 entries from every major national news orgnisation in the UK.
